This is by far the best history of Santa Claus I have seen (and I’ve searched them all out) . A respectful treatment of the religious tradition of St. Cut and a very extensive history to the current narrative of Santa Claus. I can not recommend this video more highly

My children were coming to the age where they did not bear in Santa as a live person who comes down your chimmeney. They had a lot of questions about how he got to be the icon that he is and what exactly he had to do with Christmas a very religious holiday. This explains alot of who the dependable Santa Claus was and how he got to be so commercialized. Grand for some children and all adults.

Opus has always been my common comics character and it was a dim, sunless day when Bloom County ended. When I first heard that this special would be on TV, I was very inflamed. I was not disapointed.

One of the best things about this video is that it has two levels. Kids will like it because it has plenty of comical voices and, of course, Bill the Cat. But there is also a higher level that adults will luxuriate in with allusions to primitive sunless and white movies and references only they would net.

The record is about Opus, a penguin, who asks Santa for a pair of wings that work. He tries everything from therapy to balloons in order to skim. The ending really shows the meaning of Christmas and is, in my belief, the best Christmas yarn (and should be shown on TV again) . This is a mountainous video that any kid would really savor and one that their parents will study forward to as well.

I originally taped this special the one and only time it aired on TV. My VCR at the time was broken and recorded everything in dark in white, but I loved Opus N Bill so mighty I kept the tape for years. After looking for a staunch tape of it everywhere with no success, I discovered Amazon shortly after the position came online and to my astonishment, Amazon had Opus N Bill listed. I bought it immediately! It was the first take I ever made on Amazon and years later it is peaceful to this day, my current. I was thrilled to rep it on VHS wait on then. The only thing that would thrill me more would be if it was released on DVD today.

Trivia on movies—

Each version of Dickens’ well-known yule account has its fans, and the ‘38 A CHRISTMAS CAROL is no exception. This 69 shrimp Loew’s release features an animated company tedious Reginald Owen as Ebenezer Scrooge. Gene and Kathleen Lockhart are Bob and Mrs. Cratchit and their daughter June plays a Cratchit child. Leo G. Carroll is Marley’s ghost and Ann Rutherford portrays “Christmas Past.” Silent-era clown Billy Bevan, who also lent his raspy basso affirm to early Looney Tunes shorts, appears as “Leader of Street Gape.”

In the romantic comedy CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT (1945), Sydney Greenstreet is third billed unhurried Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan. Miss Stanwyck’s character was based on Gladys Taber, a ladies magazine columnist who lived on a Connecticut farm. John Dehner cameos as a region trooper. Dehner began as a Disney animator, then appeared often on radio– he was Paladin on HAVE GUN, WILL Proceed. Other cast members: Reginald Gardiner, Una O’Conner and Frank Jenks. Also here is “ditzy blonde” specialist Joyce Compton. (To scrutinize Miss Compton at her nuttiest, check out Eddie Sutherland’s 1940 turn-of-the-century farce, THE VILLAIN Level-headed PURSUED HER, with Alan Mowbray as the baddie and Buster Keaton playing his opposite.)

IT HAPPENED ON FIFTH AVENUE (1947) was the very first ALLIED ARTISTS release. This company was formed when MONOGRAM Pictures and two smaller outfits merged. Frank Capra was slated to announce until producer-director Roy Del Ruth purchased cloak rights to this sage of a homeless man and his friends who choose advantage of a manson left empty while the owners are away for the holidays. The heavenly cast includes Don DeFore, Ann Harding, Charles Ruggles, Victor Broken-down, Gale Storm, Grant Mitchell, Edward Brophy and Alan Hale Jr.

Ernst Lubitsch’s holiday romance THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (1940) was a first veil adaptation of Hungarian playwright Miklós László’s “Perfumerie” (aka “Illatszertár”) . This storyline was later conventional for the 1949 musical, IN THE Marvelous Used SUMMERTIME and in 1998 for YOU’VE GOT MAIL. Director Lubitsch, who also worked in a Budapest shop as a boy, called this his approved movie. Unlike most productions, all scenes were filmed sequentially. Cast includes Margaret Sullavan, Jimmy Stewart, Frank Morgan, Joseph Schildkraut and in a walk-on, Sarah Edwards.

Christmas in Connecticut is a colossal holiday romantic comedy about a young woman who writes for a magazine geared to homemakers. She claims to be married, have a child and live on a farm in Connecticut, but is actually a single, childless, apartment dweller. The problems launch when her publisher wants her to give a original war hero a home for the holidays on her Connecticut farm. She consents to marry a long-time boyfriend who actually has a farm in Connecticut to assign her editor from losing his job. They arrange to be married on the farm, but the assume doesn’t gain the job done before the war hero arrives. That creates some awkward moments. The housekeeper tends babies for women who are working during the war, and they are supposed to be “the child” but with a different baby showing up each day confusion ensues. Stanwyck’s character, of course, begins to descend for the hero, who is also falling for her but thinks she is a married woman and is trying to respect that. It is all beneficial, smart fun and “What a Christmas!”

The Shop Around the Corner is a very clever comedy whose theme has been repeated in other movies, as mentioned in Annie’s review. Clara is falling for the man with whom she corresponds on purely intelligent subjects. She has never met him. At the same time she gets a job in a leather goods shop and cannot bag along with her boss (Jimmy Stewart) . You can figure it out from there. Scrumptious fun. Either one of these two movies is worth the trace of this package.

It Happened on 5th Avenue is a safe film. The owner of a 5th Avenue mansion is wintering elsewhere and a hobo helps himself to the house. He invites in others who need a spot to discontinue in the housing crunch following WWII. Without their knowledge, one of their fellow tenants is actually the owner, who hides his identity to seek what is going on in his home.

Everyone knows the narrative of A Christmas Carol, so I won’t justify on this one. This is a unbelievable situation of holiday movies at a effect that can’t be beat. If you don’t like sad and white movies this may not satisfy you, but the stories are expansive and my family really enjoys them. The only complaint I have is that they are double-sided disks and I remove single sided.

`Zardoz’ was produced, written, and directed by John Boorman who, like Robert Altman (`M.A.S.H’) and Ken Russell (`Women In Love’) cash in their credit earned from directing very successful commercial films and expend it to content very personal, very new, and very uncommercial films. `Zardoz’ was made honest after Boorman’s gigantic vital and commercial success with `Deliverance’ and his star in that movie, Burt Reynolds, was to play the lead role in `Zardoz’ until Burt fell ill and was replaced with Sean Connery at a cost of 1/5 of the whole million dollar budget. As high as that relative figure may seem, apparently Connery was unbiased finishing up his appearances as James Bond and no one would hire him for anything else, so he needed the money.

While there is a mountainous grief that no one will ever read this review, it is astronomical fun to write a review of this rich, quirky, and very flawed movie. For starters, I gain it easy to recognize that people have a hard time idea the movie. I have never held that fact alone against a movie, as it took me at least three viewings of `2001 A Set Odyssey’ to feel I was anywhere arrive idea it, and `2001′ has taken its rightful site among the very best American movies. It has taken me at least that many viewings to understand some of Fredrico Fellini’s movies and I mild don’t understand `8½’. But that doesn’t mean this is not a tremendous movie. But that doesn’t mean this is a stout movie. It only means it has potential the fact that it can unruffled be found on the store shelves is a testament to the fact that this movie has a lot to offer, even if it ultimately does not fully realize the filmmaker’s vision.

There are few movies I have seen which are more in need of the director’s commentary than this one. One of Boorman’s most telling observations on this commentary is the statement that there may objective be too remarkable being attempted in this movie. And, I deem this summarizes the dilemma in a nutshell.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Zardoz! Click Here

Like all factual science fiction works, the heart of `Zardoz’ is to place the stage by imagining `what would happen if this statement were true’? The central premise of the movie is the fact that some cataclysm destroyed the world as we know it and, not unlike H. G. Wells’ `The Time Machine’, humankind has split into two major subspecies, one of which is effectively immortal and the other barely survives on a subsistence level and who treat an artifact of the immortals as a god named `Zardoz’. In addition to being immortal, the higher level beings can communicate telepathically and can control lower level beings by the force of mind alone.

Some of the implications the filmmaker draws from this central premise are truly inspired. By far the most knowing is the inference that the immortals can suffer from debilitating boredom. To imagine how easy this can happen, honest imagine a dilapidated image of heaven where the vital activities are singing and playing an primitive musical instrument.

Another inspired implication is the fact that the immortals are punished by being traditional a definite number of years, so that when they are treated to restore their youth, they never grow any younger than their penal age. These two implications lead to two subgroups. These are immortals who become totally immobilized by ennui and immortals who age to the point of debilitation. If the movie stopped there, it could probably have easily filled its two hours with a rich explication of all these suppositions.

The spot is that to form the anecdote curious, the storyteller must bring a mortal into the immortals’ world to shake things up. The jam I have with the scheme Boorman uses to bring Connery’s mortal character into the immortals’ world really doesn’t seem to work very well. This element of the memoir all revolves around the premise that the mortals are being suppressed by a yarn based on the sage of the Wizard of Oz. This sage is so central to the account that the title of the movie and the name of the deity itself comes from a contraction of `wiZARD of OZ’. Connery’s character, `Zed’, with the aid of his fellow mortal `brutals’ manages to collect aboard the large stone head which embodies Zardoz’ after Zed discovers the fact that the colossal and powerful `Zardoz’ is, like the fictional wizard, a sham. My biggest plight is that the analogy between this future earth and the Land of Oz is very, very thin. There is no explanation I can fathom for why the mortals are divided into two classes, one of which, the `brutals’ like Zed use all their time, catching, raping, and killing the other mortal class. This set remits somewhat when we explore the brutals acting as overseers while the other mortals employ time planting crops, but this subplot is simply not very well developed.

The considerable thread of the narrative is in the contention between two immortals over what to do with Zed. The `scientist’ who wishes to discover Zed wins a vote to maintain him alive for 21 days. In the course of this period, Zed manages to hobble up the world of the immortals and do a lot to bring some steady interest to their life.

As the movie was done very cheaply in the early 1970’s, today’s computer based effects simply did not exist and the `on camera’ effects are a bit threadbare, not unlike the curtain late which the Midwestern huckster manipulates the image of the Wizard of Oz. And yet this does not detract from the movie. The film mostly suffers from too worthy implausibility and, to paraphrase the Austrian Emperor’s comments on Mozart’s music in `Amadeus’, there are `simply too many ideas’.

An yet, this is a really worthwhile movie to eye, enhanced by medieval music expert David Munro’s bag.

Director John Boorman has delivered some very helpful films such as “Deliverance” (1972), “Excalibur” (1981) and “The Emerald Forest” (1985) .

“Zardoz” (1974) occupies a very special state in his filmography. As Boorman also wrote the screenplay, we may remove it is a “film d’auter”. He not only conveys a sci-fi epic, he also gives the viewer a parable about power and immortality.

The whole movie has the observe and feel of mid `70s cosmovision. Daily life in the Vortex resembles a Hippie community; there are scenes with kaleidoscopic effects (Ken Russell will utilize very similar images in “Altered States” (1980) ) ; scenes of mass killing are shown with minimal blood effusion and so on.

The narrative is a classical sci-fi argument: in far future humankind is fractioned in two groups. One group lives in an edenic valley, profits from immortality and suffers no material needs. The other, by far the hugest group, dwells in a destitute Earth subject to the persecution of the Brutals.

Brutals are servers of god Zardoz, an titanic flying and speaking stone head. Their religion promises eternal after-life at the Vortex. Zed, one of them, decides to roam into Zardoz’s head and starts a “heroes’ whisk” of discovery, enlightenment and trial.

From there on a complex situation, requiring viewer’s attention is deployed.

There are several high points in this film.

Cinematography directed by multi-Oscar awarded Geoffrey Unsworth (“Cabaret” (1972) and “Tess” (1979) ) is graceful, portraying slender and attractive women bodies. He uses color and texture (especially cloth texture) masterfully. The film has received a BAFTA nomination to Best Cinematography.

Playacting shows a young, shapely and stylized Charlotte Rampling impersonating Consuella, a sensitive Eternals’ leader opposing Zed. Sara Kestelman as May, in her first movie role, insinuates an glorious personality. Last but not least Sean Connery fleshes Zed gallantly; we must remember that, at that time, he was vigorously trying to detach himself from his alter ego: James Bond.

It is a helpful sci-fi movie for sophisticated audience!

It’s a move of the soul as a man goes home in his heart, in this dramatization of the moral sage of Alvin Straight, who drove a lawn mower over three-hundred miles through the set of Iowa and into Wisconsin, to scrutinize his brother, a stroke victim with whom he had not spoken for ten years. “The Straight Fable,” directed by David Lynch, recounts the epic of Alvin (Richard Farnsworth), who place out to stare his brother, Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), upon hearing of his stroke. Alvin is prevented from driving because of unpleasant eyesight, and he won’t choose a bus because he doesn’t trust another’s driving. A widower who lives with his daughter, Rose (Sissy Spacek), Alvin, not a man of means, resorts to the only plot he knows how, to salvage to Lyle. He needs to place the poor blood leisurely them before it’s too late; an estrangement born of “nettle and pride.” Hauling a make-shift trailer, and with three five-gallon cans of gas and a cooler chubby of hot dogs, Alvin sets out, alone and positive, on his lawn mower. Now in the twilight of his life, having learned to “separate the wheat from the chaff,” the waddle affords Alvin plenty of time to assume on his life, and steels him in his quest to do what he feels he has to do. Along the plot he befriends and is befriended by the strangers he encounters; a testimony to the bountifulness of the human spirit. When a young man asks him what the worst thing is about being aged, he replies, “Remembering when you were young.” Richard Farnsworth gives the performance of a lifetime as Alvin, this stubborn, prideful man, who has learned humility with age, and you can peek the wisdom of his years in his eyes. Farnsworth connects with the audience from the beginning, aptly conveying the yearning of a soul in need of atonement, and the determination of the man to conclude his amends. Sissy Spacek, also, gives a terrifically nuanced performance as Rose, the “unimaginative” daughter who lives daily with demons of her maintain. That the members of the Academy failed to nominate her for best-supporting actress for her work here is nothing short of criminal; her Rose is a stunning section of work. David Lynch, as well, has done a great job of bringing Alvin’s legend to the veil. He has woven a rich visual and emotional tapestry, all poignantly delivered with a gentle hand. Beautifully photographed, the lush vistas of the Midwest consider Alvin’s situation of mind, underscoring the deeper meanings of what is really a spiritual inch, during which the past mingles with the exhibit. Lynch has taken a wistful, almost poetic arrive throughout, which, together with the fable is reminiscent of Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries.” The scene in which Alvin finally meets up with Lyle is perfectly and touchingly executed, and is one of the most memorable scenes in the movie. The supporting cast includes James Cada (Danny), Everett McGill (Tom), Barbara E. Robertson (Deer Woman), John Farley (Thorvald), and Kevin P. Farley (Harold) . With an artistic hand, Lynch has crafted an unforgettable film. “The Straight Epic” is Alvin’s yarn, but the paddle belongs to us; a reminder of what is really indispensable in life, and the needs we all section at one time or another. It’s an engrossing movie that will touch you and develop you believe, as well; and as far as I’m concerned, that’s about as grand as it gets.

With ‘The Straight Story’ David Lynch has weaved together a subtle, keen epic about age, regret, and family. The record is of Alvin Straight, a 73 year archaic man who has seen most of what life has to dish out and learns that his brother suffered a stroke. With terrible eyes and no license, he sets out on a lumber on a riding lawnmower to peer his brother, who he hasn’t spoken to in ten years.

What I loved most about this movie is the simplicity; of the yarn, the characters, the filming. Yet within that classic style is a movie that is incredibly piquant. The stories that Alvin has to scream about his life are saddening, touching, and almost gross. He talks about being customary, about fighting in World War II, and about his regrets of not speaking to his brother. He runs into quite a few people along the contrivance who attend him out, and their stories contribute to a beautifully crafted script.

Richard Farnsworth is convincing in the role of Alvin. His abilities are most especially outlined in the sunless tone of his snort, and the seek of regret and hope in his eyes. It is rare that I have grown to respect and savor a character so distinguished. David Lynch’s direction is not dusky or creepy like his other works, but carefully and nicely photographed in large harmony with the script. The cinematography is smoothe, and the extended takes indicate his abilities as a director and the actors abilities as well.

This film is done in a classic manner, and the results are appealing in a rare contrivance. I sincerely hopes this film eventually gets the recognition it deserves.

The fable is about a boy who knows a princess and both of them have this secret care for for eachother. The princess decides that she wants to screech the boy and asks him to meet him at some ruins, but things go poor. She ends up losing all of her memories which are in the get of feathers and the boy goes on a quest to net them all relieve. So ends up meeting the dimensional witch who for a fee will send him to where he needs to go and hopefully net her feathers. In his case the fee is that no matter how many he collects, so no matter how powerful of her memory returns to her, she will never remember him. Two other characters go along with him and a crazy adventure begins. (This is a rough summary since I am trying to maintain out potential spoilers) .

Is it worth having on Blu-ray versus DVD is probably the main put a question to. I say yes do to it’s rich color detail and artwork. The anecdote is titillating, chubby of fantasy and adventure. It is fairly end to the unusual manga work done by Clamp who wrote many common stories such as Magic Knight Rayearth, Angel Links, Chobits, X, and xxxholic unbiased to name a few. This fable to me, and I really bask in the works by Clamp, is objective far noble in comparison to the other stories they have written. It also has many of the characters from the different stories in it and for those who like Card Captor Sakura a very essential character is based off of her. While it might not be one of my top three animes it is in my top three for a must explore on Blu-ray. Out of the 140 anime titles I acquire, I would care for to recognize this in the intention I maintain it was ment to be watched.

“Cotton Comes to Harlem” is a solid, comical, and most of all, chilly movie which was, besides “Shaft” and “Coffy,” to position the trend of the murky movies of the 70s. Observe how Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques spin and talk, and you’ll know the meaning of “style.”

Based on Chester Himes’s modern, the film follows the two super-cool cops who suspect that Rev. O’Malley’s “Relieve to Africa” campaign (minimun entry 100 dallors needed) is a fraud to take money from people living in Harlem. But things acquire complicated when, during the rally, the organization is attacked by masked gangsters who took the money of $87,000, and that was done under the nose of the very cops. Positive to nail the criminal, and possibly the preacher himself, the detective Gravediffer & Coffin launch their investigation, and do it in their fill fashion.

The film keeps the lickety-split streak with a tightly knit web of characters including Reverend’s gorgeous wife Iris. But most charming section of the film remains the same today: its being droll and shining. In fact, you will gawk among violent actions suddenly unexpected humor. The best thing of the film is, in my book, the car jog scene that include “the cemetary coast” and “a flying guy.” The film also ends with a showdown in the Apollo Theater (though I don’t know whether the inside scene of it was really shot there) And the actual Harlem locale of the 70s, which helps to compose the authentic atomospher, would be someday a precious characterize of the Unusual York City.

In short, this is a film Quentin Tarantino with his known flair for characters and account might have shot 30 years ago. Some allotment of the film sight, I admit, dated today when you witness women’s parts are miniature better than secondary, fair catering obligatory sex scenes. Quiet, those scenes have been given diminutive touch of humor, that might almost compensate for the lack of the hide goddess like Pam Grier. Seize this one, along with “Coffy” and “Shaft” and perhaps “Across the 110th Street.” That makes a swiftly course of learning what the blaxploitation films are all about.

Those two main charaters are to reappear in “Advance Abet Charlston Blues,” which is, unfortunately, not as capable as this one.

Seeing Judy Glide in this movie is worth the ticket of admission alone! The movie itself has an enchanting storyline and it does bounce around a puny but is definately intelligent. This movie isn’t as cliche as many of the other films in this genre. There are some top-notch toddle scenes and it was engrossing to study Redd Foxx pre ‘Sanford and Son’. I would judge this one of the most critical movies of the blaxploitation genre.

Take “The Intelligent” and the better parts of “The Blair Witch Project,” let them go k-i-s-s-i-n-g up in a tree, and “Session 9″ is what you’ll catch. I can’t say enough qualified things about this movie. It’s the best-made, most atmospheric, genuinely creepiest dread movie I’ve seen in a long, long time. It’s the kind of movie that restores your faith in a whole genre, making up for every poor teen awe film and mindless sequel you might’ve sat through in the last few years. What can I say? “Session 9″ is the fleck of gold you hope against hope to get smart amid the broken rocks and sand at the bottom of your pan.

Directed by Brad Anderson (“Next End Wonderland”), “Session 9″ tells the narrative of a team of six asbestos abatement workers hired to shapely out in one week’s time the deserted Danvers Mental Hospital in Massachusettes. The film was shot onsite in the historic red-bricked monster of a building once known as the Danvers Lunatic Asylum. There’s no shortage of creepy atmosphere at hand, and the film-makers expend it to their purpose, slowly bringing to boil a story of escalating interpersonal frictions and dizzying madness.

“Session 9″ works on many levels. On the surface, it’s a taught thriller, offering more than a few jump-out-of-your seat scares; it’s also an involving character explore of six men thrown together under high-pressure conditions. The acting is all profitable, but Peter Mullen and David Caruso are particularly capable as the boss and foreman of the asbestos team. At its heart, “Session 9″ is a compelling psychology tapestry, woven together from frightened voices, spooky sounds, and rich visual metaphor.

From the opening scenes where the team tours the massive building, it’s glowing sure that Brad Anderson didn’t miss the day in film school when they studied Stanley Kubrick. The prominence of tiresome, wide tracking shots, ironic daylight, and place-as-character motifs are all strongly reminiscent of The Shimmering.” So is remarkable of the storyline. But “Session 9″ is more than unprejudiced a “Incandescent” knock-off. It slowly builds its maintain character and atmosphere, managing to obtain something current, unusual, and truly scary. If you’re a fan of sizable scare films and have begun to peril that they don’t even try to obtain them anymore, please glimpse “Session 9.”

The Danvers Mental Hospital is a Proper, honest-to-goodness asylum in Massachusetts that pioneered and perfected the frontal lobotomy. Built in the 1850’s and closed in the mid-1980’s due to lack of location funding, this movie is filmed entirely(camcorder style) in the once crowded (with over 2500 patients) & unexcited to this day, horribly faulty asylum. I must say, that the undisputed STAR OF THIS FILM is the ASYLUM, itself. The cast does a better than average job in delivering right characters, however…

A group of Hazmat workers are hired to carry out the task of asbestos removal in the immense hospital. Gordon, the crew boss, promises that the job will be finished in 7 days. Each crew member will receive 10 Tremendous as a bonus once they meet the deadline, which, no matter how many eerie, exclusive & unexplained things originate to happen in the asylum and to the workers, the promise of the money keeps them all to their appointed task.

This movie is filmed very effectively a la Stanley Kubrick’s “The Incandescent” style. That is to say, each day of the week is stated, a shot of the asylum is shown & then the day is filmed. This is a frequently old-fashioned tactic that screenwriters/directors employ to accomplish a sense of foreboding, and BOY, DOES IT EVER WORK in this film. Tremendous cinematography & a really frighteningly outlandish musical win assist to accomplish the sense of inducing madness that this film makes you feel. It also has borrowings of “The Sixth Sense” inasmuch, clues are given throughout the film so that you may figure out for yourself, (if you are paying halt attention) what oddities and malevolent forces are at work in the asylum & in the space. You will experience what REALLY “Lives in the Extinct and Wounded…” I guarantee it!
