This is probably the most fresh of all the Astaire/Rogers films, because while it is enormously savory, it isn’t principally because of the musical numbers. In fact, the dance numbers are among the weakest of all their films. What makes the film a delight is the comedy, and the person who drives the comedy is Ginger Rogers. Ginger was not Fred’s equal as a dancer, but she complemented him perfectly. Calm quite young in their first film together (she was 21 when filming started for FLYING TO RIO), Fred was able to mold her dance style to fit his perfectly. She was able to follow him perfectly, and many of their dances have their finest moments as she reacts in her face to what is happening in their dance.
Where Ginger far surpassed Fred was as an actress. At the time of CAREFREE, she had already scored a major success the year before in the drama STAGEDOOR (it was in the wake of this film that her costar Katherine Hepburn, who didn’t collect along with Ginger at all, quipped of Fred and Ginger, “He gives her class and she gives him sex.” But by the time of CAREFREE, Ginger’s abilities as an actress had begun to state her career apart from Fred on a higher individual plane. In fact, from this point until his comeback from retirement in 1948 (to replace the injured Gene Kelly in EASTER PARADE), Ginger was actually the larger box office plan. The next few years after CAREFREE would gape Ginger starring in a string of capable comedies like BACHELOR MOTHER and THE MAJOR AND THE MINOR, as well as winning an Oscar for KITTY FOYLE.
The residence is simple: Ginger can’t quite bring herself to feel for suitor Ralph Bellamy as she should. So, she agrees to go to a psychiatrist (Fred) to derive out why. She gets accidentally hypnotized and for the rest of the film she accidentally either loves Fred or wants to [do away with him]. The dance numbers are, as I mentioned, not among their best. There is a long slo-mo number that fails to work as well as one might hope. “The Yam” is a pale imitation of the classic numbers centering on a current dance in previous films. Possibly the best dance number, though one that is unfortunately eliminated from some television cuts of the film, is Fred’s solo number “Since They Turned Loch Lomand into Swing,” in which he combines dancing with golfing. But there is no demand about it, you glance this film not for the dance numbers, but for Ginger’s escapades as a comedienne.
When most people reflect of Fred and Ginger, flashes of incredible dancing near to mind, and Carefree delivers this! But beyound that, the laughable timing and cleverness of the writing is grand to other Fred and Ginger movie. The hypnotic exhaust of “Change Partners” (one of Irving Berlin’s best, and honest as a side label, it’s featured on Harry Connick, Jr.’s newest album “Advance By Me”) is astonishing. More than unprejudiced an adorable and cute movie, the writing and music, and of course the dancing, is fabulous.

Shortly before the release of her Steve Earle, Grammy Nominated CD/LP release, “Day After Tomorrow,” Joan Baez sat down at NYC’s 92nd Street Y to discuss her life and times with Anthony DeCurtis, who also wrote the unusual introductory chapter to her recently re-published autobiogrpahy, AND A Teach TO Snort WITH. This conversation is featured on this DVD, and the cameras fair roll…no editing! A very comfortable Joan Baez is covers subjects like Dylan, her fresh album, Dr. King, her early days with Vanguard Records, etc. Along the scheme she sings a few songs and fields questions from her audience. The overall quality of this item is certainly acceptable, but don’t request high definition or widescreen…the sound volumn varies, and the audio even cuts out for a brief few seconds on one of her signature songs. Nonetheless, the purpose of this DVD isn’t to exhibit off engineering feats, but for MS Baez to allege her anecdote in her hold words. Doubled wrapped in not one, but two, scarves, MS Baez is looking lovely exquisite after 50 years as a major social/entertainment force in this world! This DVD represents an valuable statement of musical and social history, and serves as a large companion share to her autobiography, as well as the upcoming (October 2009) PBS “American Masters” series video biography of MS Baez. A astronomical slouch on this one is not using microphones on the audience members making comments and/or asking questions…leaving the viewer of the DVD to wonder what on earth is so comic, or meaningful. At times the moderator does explain the audience’s questions…but not all the time.

When I saw that there was a “jubilant zombie movie” being shown at my local film festival, it sounded hilarious and I knew I wanted to gaze it. Zombie movies have always skittish and intrigued me, and are usually funny and campy to boot. However, this movie delivered remarkable more than mindless thrills and gore. It’s hard to go into too grand detail about why this movie is so unbelievable without spoiling the ending, but this movie has heartwrenching commentary on homophobia, mental illness, societal alienation and considerable more. Many issues are brought to the surface and there will be at least one that will strike a chord with viewers. Not to say this movie didn’t have screamingly droll or gory moments – it delivered in that department, too. Something for everyone!
This film is easily my approved Bruce LaBruce work to date. Everything about it is more than I had expected and left me totally glad with my unique LaBruce fix. A recent storyline and soundtrack – apt timeless costuming – comely locations around the city of Berlin – it all came together for a sometimes droll and very touching satisfied Zombie chronicle and their joyful Zombie sexcapades. The bonus stuff include the Director’s insightful commentary – deleted Zombie sex scenes (equal to those in his feature “Skin Gang”) – alternative campaigns and the modern theatrical trailer. What more could I want? Bruce has brought together a group of talented Bohemians to gain this work of art as only Europeans can provide. Needless to say I fancy it. Six Gold Stars.

This gorgeously filmed and exceedingly irregular narrative about a man named “Uncommon” is very dead lively and probably not a friendly choice for viewers operating in type A mode. It took me a kindly while to acclimate to its glacial traipse, but I’m happy I finally did.

The movie is residence in snow-covered Norway where Peculiar Horten, a lisp engineer and man of few words…very, very few words…is about to manufacture his last hurry on the rails before retirement. Until now, Odd’s life has been one of steady-as-he-goes routine, puffing on his pipe, tending to his parakeet, driving his remark and visiting his unresponsive mother, the onetime ski jumper, at her nursing home. But now, suddenly, Odd’s life is about to become very curious indeed: When he bypasses a locked door to catch access to his bear retirement party, he somehow winds up in a unusual apartment spending the night in a cramped kid’s bedroom. When he tries to meet with the man who wants to choose his boat, he somehow winds up lost in the middle of an airport runway, with security on his tail. When he goes to acquire dressed after a swim and sauna, he finds that someone’s made off with his boots, leaving him only a pair of knowing red high heels to saunter home in and, amazingly, they fit.
But it’s only after Curious offers to hail a cab for a man lying prone on the sidewalk that things commence to win really really irregular and…eventually and, of course, slowly….lead to a most satisfying ending. A gigantic choice for something to inspect while snowbound…or wishing you were.

(P.S. Anyone know why a tale about someone named Unusual Horten would be titled “O’Horten” and not “O. Horten”? )
If you loved Kitchen Stories, (Kitchen Stories (Unusual Swedish/ Norwegian Version with English Subtitles) Salmer fra kjøkkenet), you will worship this film. I really loved O’Horten.
Oh this movie moves very slowly. Yes it most certainly plods along at it’s believe special stride. It is Norwegian, I don’t judge things disappear very hastily in Norway in the winter. The record is about Irregular Horten (yes his name is Weird – I presume a perfectly normal name in Norwegian) a assure engineer that is about to retire after decades of perfect service. He is a tedious man, does things exactly the same all the time, pudgy of routine. He is also a very level-headed humble person. The director places Strange in odd situations that originate him leave his routine.
The cinematography is noteworthy. In an early scene, Unusual is sitting in the engineer’s seat of the mutter, he’s framed by an modern diamond shape. Later when he is talking with the hotel owner, somebody we sense has more than fair a hotel / client relationship with Unique, she is very carefully framed in a cabinet that resembles the declare. Subtle moments like this happen throughout the film. It’s a runt technique that adds so noteworthy power to the film. The pacing is fair so perfect, unimaginative and methodical. The director never presses forward too quickly; he also never repeats the punch line or key moment or speaks past that moment. I loved the timing. The sets were spartan, reflecting the simple routine life of Strange. Things bag great more complicated approach the ruin of the film when he meets a friend; his house is stout of clutter.
The director Zigzag Hamer is simply astounding. There is a amazing similarity and style with Kitchen Stories (1950’s Norway, efficiency experts sat in Norwegian kitchens on a high chair and observed and recorded all the movements of the cook) . It is the rare director that doesn’t have to maintain every tiny with action, which can seize their time to bid a anecdote.
The film is rated PG-13, the MPAA must be less restrictive in a wonderful arrangement. The rating kind of surprised me given a scene with bulky frontal male and female nudity. One scene is through an underwater pool window, and is fairly innocent – three people swim by. The other is a male in a sauna; nothing irregular in Norway, but a bit queer in the US. I am not contending that the film should be anything but this rating, parents might like to know there are a couple of scenes. There’s no violence, strong language, or unsuitable psychological drama.
The film is presented in Norwegian with English subtitles. There is no English sound track. In addition to a few previews, the DVD includes an interview with the director. It appears this interview is some kind of Norwegian television program or a meet the director night in a night club somewhere. The program is called Blatt Larrett. The two men sit at a table in front of some dreadful blue background and they wear these terrible headset microphones (like the murky microphones Madonna weak a long time ago) . Well the interview is 10 minutes and the Hooked Hamer never seems to reply any questions. It is a tall ruin of 10 minutes.
I enjoyed this film very grand. It is uninteresting. The acting is deliberate. The scenery is sparse. But there is a heart in this film and something very strong.

No exclaim with the transfer per se since it is a digital cartoon this edition appears to be from the same source as the previous edition. Should you upgrade? Not if you have the previous two disc edition but if you have the single disc edition and you want the extras, this is the method to go. Sound is crystal obvious with nice employ of 5.1 effects.
The DVD ROM printables and “Scrat’s Frozen Fun Facts” an interactive feature that can be accessed during the film appear to be the newest features on this station. The latter has behind-the-scenes clips you the film in various stages of production while also including comments from experts on natural history discussing the what scientist beget the world was like then. Most of the featurettes are recycled from the previous edition. If you purchased the previous two disc situation of this movie, I’d select a pass on this one. There’s no improvement in this edition vs. the earlier two disc position in my mind.
Here’s why:
First, a huge character driven tale with a sure message. The heroes in this chronicle don’t commence out as heroes at all. Sid is an annoying and rather pathetic sloth who is left slack when all his friends migrate. Manfred is a tall with “issues” who at the beginning is walking the gross scheme for some reason. Why? Does the scene with the spellbinding cave drawings interpret this? Was his wife and offspring killed, and was he walking the despicable diagram to extinguish his occupy life? Diego the sabertooth tiger is an order following killer on a mission.
Each of these characters grow beyond themselves to set aside a human baby. Sid assumes responsiblity and develops courage. Diego learns to mediate for himself and do the lawful thing. Manfred overcomes his danger and self-centerdness and endures all kinds of trials to place a baby who may grow up to be a hunter of mammoths. This is a epic how anyone, regardless of how non-heroic they may be, can rise above themselves and do what is honest when they have to.
Second, this DVD lets you recognize the movie five different ways: Widescreen, Fullscreen, “Nutty Movie” mode where you can discover the deleted scenes as if they’d been spliced support into the movie, commentary mode, and “shameful frigid” mode where you survey the movie in a window while documentary material plays in another window. How icy is that?
Third, the deleted scenes are actually very inviting. They have their occupy commentary too. Sylvia is a mountainous character (a sloth girlfriend of Sid’s) who was going to be in the movie but was cleave out and replaced. The commentary tells why.
Fourth, the two shorts are gigantic. Gone Nutty is more of Scrat chasing acorns, and Bunny is a colorful short about an elderly female rabbit’s last minutes of this life and the transition to the next.
And there’s a lot more. It originate rob until the next ice age for me to find through all the stuff on this DVD!

Vincent Trace easily deserved the title of king of the B-grade dismay flicks. He obviously relished playing larger than life villains and the merciless Dr. Phibes is one of his best roles!
After fleeing from the law to his secret crypt at the destroy of “The Dreadful Dr. Phibes”, Phibes (Tag) returns to again scrutinize out a diagram to return his deceased wife to the living and deal with interfering interlopers along the draw too! His quest takes him to Egypt in search of the river of life that can provide the respond to his dreams…..
The second Phibes film is even more polished than the first, with Robert Quarry providing a lovely adversary to Phibes as the cunning archaelogist Beiderbeck, himself living on borrowed time. Additionally, there is a unbelievable assist cast with such luminaries as Peter Cushing, Terry Thomas & Hugh Griffiths adding more finesse to this production.

And keeping in line with the Biblical plagues & gory comeuppances aspect of the first Phibes production, those persons humdrum enough to challenge the outrageous doctor soon meet their doom by a variety of unpleasant and ingenious means!!
A campy, thrilling and absorbing film that has not diminshed in enjoyment on each subsequent viewing….and the transfer to DVD has kept the colors and art deco mood of the film very well. A clear recommendation to any cult film fans collection…both Phibes adventures are colossal entertainment!
Unlike Vincent Price’s the Flee and Dr. Goldfoot, this time the second one is better. The deformed and demented doctor is relieve to try and revive his beloved wife (Caroline Munro in an uncredited, non-speaking role) . Instead of the revenge place from the first film, this one has Phibes in a run with Biederbeck (Robert Quarry) to gape who can win plot to the river of life. This shaded comedy is fair a slight better than the first due to a more racy residence and a stronger supporting cast, although Peter Cushing only has a couple of lines and is unexcited billed third. Notice seems to really bask in himself in the Phibes role and Robert Quarry is a very grand advisary. In the leisurely 60’s -early 70’s, Vincent Label did some really feeble films like Bawl and Wail again, the Oblong box and Roar of the Banshee that gave him top billing but gave him very puny to do. So, it was tremendous that he got to revive his fright career by doing some heavenly films like the the two Dr. Phibes films and Theater of Blood.

Everyone who has ever taken high school English classes will no doubt be familiar with Harper Lee’s time honored memoir. As is mentioned in the accompanying DVD, Fearfull Symmetry, it is second only to the Bible in the hearts and minds of U.S. readers. This is probably also the most often-shown film in said classrooms. No need to reshash the story-line, then.
This DVD spot offers an agreeable transfer of the well-known unlit and white cinematography of the prolific Russel Harlan. It’s a actual treat to hear from so many of the people who were interested in the production, from the producer, Alan J. Pakula, to the now grown actors who played Scout and Jim. The audience gains sizable insights into what made this film so special, not only to the legions of its admiring fans, but to everyone fervent in creating it. We learn the scenes that Horton Foote, the screenwriter added from the book to arrive character development (the scene showing Atticus putting Scout to bed and her questioning Jim about their mother as Atticus overhears them from the porch, was not in the book, for instance) . We obtain to hear from Elmer Bernstein talk about the genesis of his unforgettable soundtrack. Due credit is also given to Stephen Frankfurt, for his highly creative and fresh title develop, which sets the tone so beatifully for the rest of the film.
There is no examine that this is director Robert Mulligan’s greatest film, nor that in his portrayal of Atticus Finch, Gregory Peck found the role most perfectly noble to his character and rock-solid persona. This is a film about integrity, essentially, and there is not a unfounded moment in the film. This compilation should be included in any film collector’s library. I hope it continues to be shown in English classes until time immemorial. It’s message and its relevance to the human condition will never go out of style, one hopes. Major Praise to Universal Studios and to all those enthusiastic in assembling this perfect DVD special edition.

Like so many teachers, I’ve conventional the VHS version of “To Destroy A Mockingbird” to snarl the Elements of Literature to high school students.
Today, the internet has a wealth of resources to encourage teachers and students using this classic adaptation of Harper Lee’s unusual. The documentary, “Petrified Symmetry” produced in 1998 to be included on this DVD Collector’s Edition, is vast resource for teachers, students and all those who admire and have been touched by “Mockingbird.”
The 130 little documentary, written and directed Charles Kiselyak, both discusses how the film was made and it’s general literary elements. The film is one of the most effectively edited documentaries I have seen, linking key scenes from “Mockingbird” with talking heads, composed photos and unlit and white film taken in various localities across the south.

The documentary narration, written by Charles Kiselyak and read with tremendous emotion by Mary Williams, is literary and quite sophisticated.
The talking heads include: screenwriter Horton Foote, director Robert Mulligan, producer Allan J. Pakula and composer Elmer Bernstein. Members of the cast appearing in the film: Gregory Peck (Atticus Finch), Phillip Alford (Jem), Mary Badham (Scout), Collin Wilcox (Maybella Ewell), Brock Peters (Tom Robinson) and Robert Duvall (Boo Radley) .
Director Charles Kiselyak with the relieve of Harper Lee was able to collect three residents to discuss their lives in Monroeville, Alabama. A.B. Blass and Norman Barnett prefer life in the cramped town during the depression, and Ida Gaillard, a retired high school teacher, brings an exciting perspective to what life was (may have been) like in the town Harper Lee customary as the model for Maycomb.
The literary and social significance of the “Mockingbird” are discussed by shadowy attorney, Cleophis Thomas, Jr., and Claudia Durst Johnson, author of “Threatening Boundries.”
In the DVD’s printed supplement, Charles Kiselyak indicates that while Harper Lee was not willing to appear in the documentary, she was very pleasurable in the production. She was thrilled with the director’s conception to inaugurate the documentary with the first verse one of her approved poems, William Blake’s, “Tyger:”
Tyger, Tyger burning sparkling, In the forests of the night; What rotten hand or notice, Could frame they stupefied symmetry,
Kiselyak’s film discusses Lee’s recent as both a method of life and a passage from innocence into experience and then attend toward innocence — “Unnerved Symmetry.”
“Mockingbird” and it’s DVD documentary will touch your soul.

Of the three individual Pink Panther Classic Cartoon Collection DVDs, volume 3 is my least approved. It has cartoons from 1968-75 and it seems the writers were running out of ideas. A lot of these episodes are bland and uninspired with plots that were done before. A lot of PP chasing things, dogs getting blamed for PP’s deeds, insect anguish, etc. There is even a flash benefit episode (“Pink-In”) . It also includes what I reflect is the worst PP cartoon of all time, “Broken-down Pink.” PP, dinosaurs and a caveman bustle around competing over a bone. It has to be seen to enjoy how dull it is. Not only that but it includes a laugh track!!?? The only episode here that had promise is “Pink Aye,” but it ends with the obsolete lounge chair turned lion gag. If you only want to grasp one PP DVD, derive volume 1. It has “Pink, Plunk, Plink” that includes a cameo appearance by Henry Mancini, “Pink Ice” and “Sink Pink” which feature PP speaking, and “Natty Pink” which, even with the laugh track, is one of my popular PP cartoons. Here’s what volume 3 has to offer:
Pinkcome Tax: PP (in Robin Hood style) tries to keep a man imprisoned for his inability to pay taxes.
Pink-a-Rella: PP gets his paws on magic witch’s wand and turns a awful, humdrum Jane into a princess so she can glean a date with Pelvis Parsely. Comic part: Pelvis tries the slipper on PP.
Pink Pest Control: PP has a termite quandary.
Think Before You Pink: PP has inconvenience crossing the street (uh…yeah) .
Slink Pink: PP sneaks into a home with stuffed wildlife and keeps getting the hunter’s dog in danger (this legend line had been done several times before) .
In the Pink of the Night: PP is not an easy riser.
Pink on the Cob: PP has crow wretchedness.
Extinct Pink: (Laugh Track=LT) This may be the worst PP ep ever. All it is is PP, a caveman, and dinosaurs competing over a bone.
A Cruise in the Pink: (Voices=V) A fruitfly is on the loose.
Pink Blue Plate: PP helps an overworked fry cook.
Pink Tuba-dore: (LT) PP is bothered by a tuba player and the dog keeps being blamed for PP’s schemes (again) .
Pink Pranks: PP takes a plane to Rome but winds up in Nome (Alaska) and helps a fine seal avoid a seal pelt hunter.
The Pink Flea: PP tries to earn rid of a flea and resorts to shaving himself.
Psst Pink: PP chases a runaway tire.
Gong with the Pink: (LT) PP is a waiter at Gong Ho Restaurant and bangs the gong for orders which is next door to a glass shop. Chubby of Asian stereotypes. Definitely not PC!
Pink-In: (V) PP reads an passe pal’s letter and reminisces. This is a flashback ep with clips from Pink Package Set, Pink Pajamas, and Pickled Pink. Worn.
Pink 8-Ball: PP chases a runaway basketball.
Pink Aye: (LT) PP is a stowaway on the Luxitania (yes, that’s the name) and becomes an opera singer’s stole. It has a ancient ending with the traditional lounge chair gag.
Trail of the Lonesome Pink: (LT) PP defends furry critters from two French fur trappers.
Pink Da Vinci: PP keeps changing the mouth of the Mona Lisa.
Pink Streaker: PP makes life unhappy for a fellow skier.
Salmon Pink/Pink Elephant: These two eps have the same premise. PP feeds an animal (fish and elephant) and each winds up his pet. The writers must have been running out of ideas.
Forty Pink Winks: PP can’t derive a spot to sleep.
Pink Plasma: PP encounters a vampire.
Keep Our Forests Pink: PP is a forest ranger whose quest is to discontinuance a camper who keeps breaking the law.
Bobolink Pink: PP helps a petite bird learn to sail.

I suspect most fans of this film and Monty Python in general already enjoy a copy on DVD. The bonus features in this unique double-disc edition definitely invent it worth the uncover lift. Most of the features from the Criterion edition (two commentary tracks, five deleted scenes, radio ads) are here. (The nice 1979 BBC documentary “The Pythons” is the only feature from the Criterion version missing from this fresh position.)

The modern hour-long documentary included with this edition is worth the recall alone. All five surviving Pythons are interviewed and offer a lot of insight into the film, from its plan, to the controversy surrounding its opening (in the US and in the UK), to its lasting standing as the Pythons’ greatest work. (Yes, I know, many fans like “Grail” even more.) I’m always overjoyed to discover up-to-date interviews with the team, now all in their sixties.
The other indispensable feature is an audio reading of the recent script, recorded with all six members several months before filming began. This is grand more delightful and watchable than you might quiz, illustrated onscreen with storyboard drawings and script pages. The reading is 20 minutes longer than the film, and you hear some bits that never made it past this stage.

And the film itself, of course, is a esteem. A hysterically laughable, yet thought-provoking satire whose target is group-think in general, and not merely religion or superstition.
This is the 4th iteration of this movie that I have owned. My first was on VHS, then came the Criterion LaserDisc, which was followed by the Criterion DVD edition. I really wasn’t expecting remarkable of an improvement over the Criterion DVD since this is an older movie. Regardless of what version you bear, if you are a Python fan, you are in for a Astronomical surprise with this latest edition on Blu-ray. The narrate is reach perfection with only a couple of scenes where I noticed the tiniest bit of film grain. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me was the remastered sound elements. After trying the different sound choices, I found the PCM soundtrack to be the best. I really wasn’t expecting the sound to be that enormous for this movie, but BOY was I surprised. Sony has truly outdone themselves with this latest high def remastering of Life of Brian. This is the absolute best I have ever seen or heard of this zany film. There are details in the report that I have NEVER seend before, and I have seen this movie MANY MANY times. If I had to complain about anything, it would be that the special features were not in HD, but that is not that stout a deal since everything else about this title is unprejudiced status on.
There are many who would say this movie is a sacrilege. As a Christian, I would disagree with such a statement. I have heard some say that this movie is making light of Jesus’ ministry, and especially his crucifixion. They are missing the whole point. I contemplate this movie illustrates how some people will blindly follow religious leaders, or will unbiased go with the crowd without really questioning what they’re doing, or why they’re doing it. The scene where Brian is erroneous for Jesus and chased by the crowd is a satisfactory example. When his sandal falls off, some recall it as a brand that they should recall their gain sandal, while some decide to follow the Holy Gourd of Jerusalem. How can anyone NOT survey the humor in that??? Also, what if there really were some in the far wait on of the crowd at the Sermon on the Mount who couldn’t quite fabricate out what was being said??? I have seen this movie countless times, and at no point is Jesus ever actually made fun of. Even the crucifixion scene is obviously not a little on Jesus’ believe crucifixion. He is not the only person to ever be crucified, since there were countless others who suffered this imperfect perform of death. The crucifixion scene obviously is not about Jesus’ crucifixion since there are noteworthy more than three men being crucified. Of course, I’m clear there are those who would disagree with me. If you do accept this movie to be offensive, then simply don’t seek it. After all, this is serene a free country. To those of you who have longed for a pristine version of this classic Python share, you MUST come by this one on Blu-ray. I will be waiting patiently for Sony to announce a comparable version of the Holy Grail on Blu-ray soon.
